Makan Sungai

Hi there,

Today post is about my hometown Kimanis. It situated approximately 16-17km from Papar just about 15 minutes drive. The pictures was taken during Makan Sungai offering ceremony. Yup an offering ceremony. It is basically giving back the rivers some offering after the sungai gave us foods and other resources for us human. Most of the villagers within the Kimanis area are fishermen@nelayan. Be it Malay, Dusun and Kadazan all of them would joined hand to make the offering ceremony goes smoothly as possible. The bobohizan will lead the ceremony.. unfortunately me myself had never experienced it first hand and i just heard it from my Pa.It was claimed that, if the ancestors/villagers did not perform the ceremony the rivers would go out on a rampage...yup an amok. Every house in the villager would be asked to donate RM1 for the ceremony and the families will be given a white stripe/piece of cloth to be hang outside the veranda so that the Rogon (correct me if im wrong) Hantu sungai would not disturbed the family. That what i had been told. There would be also a ceremony in Balai Raya where they invited a Bobohizan to perform a ceremony using 'sampan olok-olok' which was made from nipah leaves. It was said that if someone crossed the sampan he/she would be dead from drowning. Well im not sure how true the story was...but may be next time they should bring TV crews to documented the ceremony..
